I want to take a moment to applaud Oprah for her show this week dedicated to raising awareness about the origins of our food supply and what is really in our food. I appreciate Oprah raises awareness for a lot of things, but given she has already had her challenges speaking out against the beef industry she must have felt pretty strongly about this for her lawyers to green light the conversation.
The show started with renowned author and journalist, Michael Pollan, providing insight and guiding the conversation about where our food comes from and what interesting ingredients are now on our super market shelves. Oprah also highlighted scenes from the movie Food Inc. and celebrated the fast food chain, Chipotle, and it's founder Steve Ells for their Food with Integrity mission. Given that I avoid fast food like the plague I must admit I had no idea Chipotle offered sustainable natural pork and chicken and that a large portion of their beans are organic. I might just need to try them one day. If you have, post your thoughts in the comments section below!
What is most important here though is that Oprah has now reached out to millions of people asking the questions that we all should be asking. Where does our food come? What is REALLY in our food?
I am in the middle of reading The Omnivore's Dilemna - but if you have no time for reading, do try to find a download of Food Inc. as they highlight the industrial food practices that so many of us are unfamiliar with. All the marketing with bucolic pastures and grazing cows - well, not so much. We will be dsicussing more details on this in our next Be Greener Newsletter as there are so many issues with our current industrial system of food production whether regarding the health of the food, the unnatural ingredients, the antibiotics and hormones in meat and poultry products, the rise in super bugs and the cheap cost of food calories.
But for now, we will thank Oprah for once again bringing such an important topic to the forefront of people's minds.
